Listen to 5 Tales from Village Schmaltzy
Our mission at the Jewish Food Society is to preserve and share Jewish recipes and the stories behind them. In early November, we had the pleasure of bringing some of those stories and dishes to life at our live storytelling event Village Schmaltzy (it’s like The Moth, but with pastrami eggrolls).
150 people gathered at the Salmagundi Art Club in Greenwich Village to hear tales of grandmothers, how cooking can heal, and inspire us to become who we have always been. As our speakers shared their stories, artist Flash Rosenberg captured them with live drawings. Afterwards, we gathered to nosh together on dishes like Egyptian sofrito, kasha varnishkes with mushrooms, and clove rugelach, and to sip Gabe Stulman’s “It Takes a Village” cocktail.
You can hear all of the delicious stories here:
Nir Mesika, chef-owner of Timna Restaurant
Marissa Lippert, owner of Nourish Kitchen + Table
Ed Schoenfeld, Red Farm
Stacey Harwood-Lehman, editor, Best American Poetry
Zohar Zohar, Zucker Bakery
The inimitable Mimi Sheraton also shared her memories of a lifetime in the Village and finally settled once and for all one of the most essential Jewish food questions: Are floaters or sinkers superior? Hear her interview with our host, Mitchell Davis of the James Beard Foundation.
Thank you so much to all of our storytellers for sharing their tales with us — and for an incredible spread of noshes — and to everyone who joined us. We hope to see you all at the next Schmaltzy.
